Laury Cullen Jr – A vanishing forest reborn
The Rolex Award for Enterprise that forester Laury Cullen Jr. received in 2004 has helped turn his ‘Dream Map’ into reality. The huge task of restoring 60,000 hectares of vanishing forest in Brazil’s once-mighty Mata Atlântica is progressing by working with local farmers and landless villagers. Under Cullen’s guidance, these dedicated people produce the seedlings of more than 100 native tree species while also planting and monitoring them. The Dream Map therefore extends beyond replanting and connecting forest patches by also contributing to the local economy and the fight against climate change. It stands for many of the ideals that inspire Rolex’s Perpetual Planet initiative. Discover more https://on.rolex.org/3vfBS0c #Rolex #PerpetualPlanet #RolexAwards

Joseph Cook – Darkening hues of Greenland
In recent years, warming summers have caused native algae living just below Greenland’s ice sheet to explode in their billions, transforming the landscape from one of whites and blues to purples and browns. These darker expanses trap more of the sun’s heat, accelerating the rate at which the ice melts and flows into the ocean. Polar scientist and 2016 Rolex Young Laureate Joseph Cook is carrying out pioneering research on the phenomenon, with the latest findings uncovering new explanations about the function of microscopic plant life in glacial melting and its role in climate change.
