The Rolex Award for Enterprise that forester Laury Cullen Jr. received in 2004 has helped turn his ‘Dream Map’ into reality. The huge task of restoring 60,000 hectares of vanishing forest in Brazil’s once-mighty Mata Atlântica is progressing by working with local farmers and landless villagers. Under Cullen’s guidance, these dedicated people produce the seedlings of more than 100 native tree species while also planting and monitoring them. The Dream Map therefore extends beyond replanting and connecting forest patches by also contributing to the local economy and the fight against climate change. His Nanopatch, a pain-free vaccine requiring no refrigeration, makes it possible for anyone to deliver immunization anywhere.
